Does love really have borders? Why you may need to translate your marriage certificate

Love is universal, unfortunately marriage certificates are not. There are, as we all know, many benefits to being married. One of these is the ability, under certain conditions, to bring your spouse to the country where they reside. This is more so the case than ever before. International marriages are more common now than ever in this globalised world. So, what would happen if one of the spouses decided to, let’s say, move back to their country of origin and the other one wanted to accompany them.

Well, in Spain, unless the marriage certificate is in Spanish, this certificate would need to be translated in order to have your marriage recognised in Spain. Also, Spain being a Civil Law country, not just any translator can do the translation. You will need to look for translation agencies such as CBlingua here in Malaga who have sworn or certified translators that can provide you with the translation you need.

Once you have the marriage certificate translated by a recognised Spanish sworn translator you can then have said marriage recognised. This could be of particular interest to those whose reason to have it recognised is for them to be able to live with their spouse. The requirements for living in Spain vary case by case. Sometimes a marriage is required, other times a domestic partnership may be enough.

At the current time, this is especially interesting for those Brits married to a Spaniard or EU citizen. Being able to prove that you are married to someone who is either from Spain or has the right to live in Spain can help to minimise any problems that may occur from a hard Brexit. However, it is not only Brits who benefit from this. Australians, Americans, South Africans, a lot of people with Spanish spouses or spouses from the EU would need to have their marriages recognised in order for them to be able to live with them in the EU.

If you add to that all the other “bureaucratic” benefits that come from a marriage or a domestic partnership, getting your marriage recognised can be very beneficial.
