“I’ve always enjoyed writing and being creative (drawing, painting, dancing, inventing stories) and I felt drawn to the unknown (languages that I didn’t understand, or people that were different to me). Also I have always wanted to travel, at school I already felt like the world was too small, and I also discovered that I found the ins and outs of literary creation exciting (I prefer analysing a book to the book itself). So I looked for a degree that allowed me to combine that would allow me to combine my wanderlust with my love of all things artistic, this led me to translation, but I continued because it also has technical elements and is very versatile. I love messing about with the computer and CAT tools and subtitling programs make me feel like a hacker! Also, because I’m naturally curious and I like to learn, but I´m not great at concentrating on anything, but when I´m translating, I´m hooked on it. It was even better because I didn’t have a clear vocation, it has opened doors for me in the international market.”

“After studying Hispanic Studies, I decided I wanted continue using my languages so I decided to study a Master’s in Translation Studies. I was completely unaware of just how important translation is today, it allows us to enjoy foreign literature, films and culture, to order food in a restaurant, to set up our furniture or electronic devices, to know and understand what is happening in the world around us. We often see pictures on the internet of funny bad translations, but few are aware of the problems that a bad translations can cause, for example to a brand’s reputation, in diplomatic or legal proceedings, and imagine how difficult putting together that Ikea coffee table would be if the instructions were translated badly? I love that translation could take me anywhere…you never know what each day will bring.”
