Brexit is fast approaching. At the moment the deadline is the 31st of October 2019. Whether the UK leaves the EU with a deal or not, there are some things you can do to make sure you’re prepared, including getting a sworn or certified translation of your documents.
There is still a lot of confusion and uncertainty about what is going to happen with Brexit both in the UK and the EU. Whatever happens, you will inevitably need a sworn translation of your documents. Here’s some information you may find useful.
If you’re planning on continuing to live in the EU after Brexit, it is best that you apply for residency in the member state you live in. There are a few different types of residency in Spain that require different documents. Usually, you will need:
- Photographs
- A form of ID
- A criminal record certificate
- A medical certificate
All of these documents must be translated by a sworn translator if they are not written in Spanish. Ask your local council where you need to apply for residency and what documents are required for your type of residency. Once you know exactly which documents you need, you will then need to get in touch with a Spanish sworn translator so that he or she can give you an official translation into Spanish of all the documents you need to stay in Spain.
You’ll also need to register for healthcare. If the UK leaves the EU without a deal on the 31st of October, British European Health Insurance Cards will be invalid. If you’re not already registered you will need:
- To be registered as a resident with your local council
- A Social Security Number (Número de Seguridad Social)
- A form of ID – translated by a sworn translator
Visit your nearest medical center and get registered. It won’t take long and will save you lots of stress and money.
The UK government also recommends that you make sure your passport is valid for at least another six months.
