“I really enjoy working in translation because every day is completely different and you never stop learning. I also enjoy being able to speak to customers in different languages and obviously getting to work with great people!”

MªTeresa

Spanish, English, Italian and Russian.

“I decided to study translation because I wanted to focus on the practical side of languages, I didn’t want to study language and literature or linguistics, I wanted to do something practical. I didn’t really know anything about the world of translation, and when I heard about the degree I enrolled without really knowing how the industry works and all the branches of translation, and honestly it was the best decision I have ever made.”

Carla

Spanish, German and English

“I love translation because you are always learning something new, translation involves a lot of research and because we translate texts on many different topics every translation is a new challenge.”

Eva

Spanish, English and Italian

“I decided to study translation because I love languages and it`s a very versatile degree with a wide range of job options.”

Marina

Spanish, English and German

“I’ve always enjoyed writing and being creative (drawing, painting, dancing, inventing stories) and I felt drawn to the unknown (languages that I didn’t understand, or people that were different to me). Also I have always wanted to travel, at school I already felt like the world was too small, and I also discovered that I found the ins and outs of literary creation exciting (I prefer analysing a book to the book itself). So I looked for a degree that allowed me to combine that would allow me to combine my wanderlust with my love of all things artistic, this led me to translation, but I continued because it also has technical elements and is very versatile. I love messing about with the computer and CAT tools and subtitling programs make me feel like a hacker! Also, because I’m naturally curious and I like to learn, but I´m not great at concentrating on anything, but when I´m translating, I´m hooked on it. It was even better because I didn’t have a clear vocation, it has opened doors for me in the international market.”

Gisella

Spanish, English, French and Italian

“To me translation is life. I love translation. Not only because it’s my profession, but also because I encounter situations every day that are similar to those that I deal with at work. Furthermore, to me translation is a very gratifying job because on many occasions it has allowed me to help people resolve personal, health or legal problems and it’s very satisfying knowing that you’re providing a service to someone who really needs it.”

Ciara

Spanish and English

“After studying Hispanic Studies, I decided I wanted continue using my languages so I decided to study a Master’s in Translation Studies. I was completely unaware of just how important translation is today, it allows us to enjoy foreign literature, films and culture, to order food in a restaurant, to set up our furniture or electronic devices, to know and understand what is happening in the world around us. We often see pictures on the internet of funny bad translations, but few are aware of the problems that a bad translations can cause, for example to a brand’s reputation, in diplomatic or legal proceedings, and imagine how difficult putting together that Ikea coffee table would be if the instructions were translated badly? I love that translation could take me anywhere…you never know what each day will bring.”

So now you’ve met some of the team and heard why we love translation we’d love to hear your thoughts on why you love translation and what translation means to you.
